Exploring V-Fe-Co-Ni-Al and V-Fe-Co-Ni-Cu high entropy alloys for magnetocaloric applications

A series of V1?x-Fe-Co-Ni-Al1+x and V1?x-Fe-Co-Ni-Cu1+x high entropy alloys with varying compositions (0 ? x 0.75) has been investigated for magnetocaloric applications. Compositions were selected according to established properties, such as configurational entropy, atomic size difference, enthalpy mixing. To study the influence composition on magnetic ordering temperatures, V (Al/Cu) contents changed while content Fe, Co Ni was retained at 20 at. % each. The crystal structure microstructure as-cast compared literature phase guidelines thermodynamic calculations based CALPHAD approach. V-Fe-Co-Ni-Al compounds are monophasic crystallize in a disordered body centered cubic or its ordered B2 variant, V-Fe-Co-Ni-Cu all multiphasic. Magnetic transitions system span over 400 K, Curie temperature ranging from 155 K equiatomic VFeCoNiAl, 456 non-equiatomic V0.25FeCoNiAl1.75. display that about 150 230 VFeCoNiCu 736 V0.25FeCoNiCu1.75. properties evaluated by means density functional theory. Individual element-specific moments, exchange integrals between pairs, temperatures calculated. V0.85FeCoNiCu1.15 is due 329 calculated isothermal change 0.75 J/kg.K field 5 T comparable other 3d metal-based form solid solutions.

The anomalies of the temperature dependences of the logarithmic decrement and eigen frequency of the free damped vibrations for Fe-Co-Ni-Ti shape memory alloys were first found in the vicinity of the reverse ay martensitic transformation. It was shown the damping capacity in the alloys investigated is comparable with that for TiNi based alloys.
